Man, Threatening To Jump, Falls 20 Feet As Crews Set Up Rescue Cushion

LOS ANGELES, CA — A man who had been threatening to jump from a pillar in Boyle Heights fell 20 feet to the ground Sunday evening as firefighters were setting up an air cushion to get him down safely, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The man was transported to a regional trauma center in unknown condition at around 5:20 p.m., firefighters said. It’s unclear if his fall to the ground was deliberate or accidental. The incident appears to have occurred at the Cesar Chavez Bridge over the Los Angeles River.

Firefighters and the Los Angeles Police Department responded to Cesar Chavez Avenue and Mission Road Sunday evening. As firefighters were setting up an air cushion below the pillar to provide the man a safe landing, he fell to the ground, according to the LAFD.
