UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — A Yorkville Gristedes will be closing up shop at the end of the month, according to a worker at the Third Avenue store.
The employee said that Friday, June 30 would be the last day for the local chain’s location at Third Avenue and East 82nd Street.
Although the worker mentioned that the building had been sold, no record of a sale could be found after a search of property records.
Records list the most recent recorded transaction involving the building as a $19 million dollar loan taken out against the building by longtime owner Marjorie Nesbitt in April 2020.
The building, with an address of 1450 Third Ave., runs along the avenue between East 82nd and 83rd streets and contains 89 residential units, according to city records. The closing of the grocery store was first noted by UES Things.
Originally founded in the late 19th century by two eponymous German brothers, Gristedes is now owned by businessman, radio host and former mayoral hopeful John Catsimatidis.
