What My Dad Hopes Will Happen on Season 4 of Broad City

What My Dad Hopes Will Happen on Season 4 of Broad City

When it comes to pop culture, my dad is pretty on top of his game. We discussed the Girls series finale earlier over text this year, shared the most insane Game of Thrones fan theories, and are both SO excited for the premiere of Broad City. Basically, my dad is a 50-something with a 20-something taste in TV shows.

We caught up earlier this week to talk Broad City and everything we hope for our gals Abbi (Abbi Jacobson) and Ilana (Ilana Glazer) this season. His first thought: “They should smoke less weed, especially Ilana,” he said, ever the protective father. “Too much of that stuff isn’t good for your brain.”

Yes, IRL an adult probably shouldn’t be smokin’ the ganj morning, noon, and night, but it does make for some pretty hilarious TV. While on the topic of Ilana’s poor decisions, he also mentioned that he thought she and Lincoln (the incredible Hannibal Buress) should give it another shot: “He’s a good dude.”

When it came to politics, though I definitely agreed with dad. “They should poke some fun at our national politicians but don’t overdo it,” he said. “We watch shows like Broad City to escape from the bad news coming from D.C.” Couldn’t have said it better myself, Dad.

Another character he wants to see return is Susie Essman as Ilana’s hilarious mom Bobbi Wexler. “That was brilliant casting.” When I mentioned how much I loved the knock-off bags episode he told me, “that episode is hilarious because your mother does the same thing on Canal Street.” Touché Dad, touché.

“Neither girl needs a real job or to get serious about their careers,” he said of Ilana’s trials and tribulations at Deals, Deals, Deals, and Abbi’s burgeoning career as a Solstice trainer. “Some of the funniest scenes were at Ilana’s workplace, and they seem to have more free time during daylight hours than any working age adult I know. A real job would totally kill that vibe.” When it comes to shows about 20-somethings, it does seem like they never work as much as they should (ahem, Friends), but my dad and I are more than happy for the show to keep it that way, for comedic purposes of course.

“Also Kelly Ripa was great because it was totally unexpected,” he added. “More guests like that!” If you forgot Ripa made a guest appearance on the show, don’t worry so did I. Let this clip be a (hilarious) refresher.

Although many of us 20-something are hoping for an Abbi and Trey reconciliation, my dad wants no such thing. “No serious boyfriend for Abbi. We don’t want to watch that kind of drama,” he said. As for the kind of drama he does want for Abbi, my dad is thinking more along the lines of the Jeremy plot line: “We want to see drama like Jeremy and pegging. We want to see her hang out with guys who are as goofy as she is.” I can definitely agree with that. Maybe if she and Trey do figure their stuff out they can get into silly antics together? A girl can only hope!

Find out if my dad’s Broad City predictions come true Wednesdays at 10:30 p.m. ET on Comedy Central.
