'Unsettled' Storm To Bring Rain, Snow, Thunder To LA County

LOS ANGELES, CA — A winter storm originating from the Gulf of Alaska is set to hit Los Angeles County Tuesday night, bringing with it thunderstorms, mountain snow and showers, according to the National Weather Service.

According to the weather service, there is a 15 to 25 percent chance of thunderstorms throughout much of the county. Rainfall totals are predicted to be in the 0.25 to 0.75-inch range with the possibility of 2 inches of rain if the storm moves slowly, forecasters said.

“Given the recent heavy rain focused over the mountains, there is a 5-15 percent chance of excessive rainfall and minor flooding focused across the mountains and foothills and near any thunderstorms,” the weather service said.

A winter weather advisory will be in effect from noon Wednesday through 9 p.m. Thursday in the San Gabriel Mountains and the Golden State (5) and Antelope Valley (14) freeway corridors. According to the National Weather Service, as much as 8 inches of snow could fall at elevations over 6,500 feet, up to 5 inches as low as 5,500 feet and up to 2 inches at 4,500 feet.

“An unsettled and showery weather pattern will likely linger into Thursday, then drier conditions should develop for the end of the week,” the National Weather Service said.

The system will also lower temperatures on Wednesday and Thursday, “as an Arctic air mass is ushered in” behind the storm. Once the system departs, temperatures will warm up to a few degrees above normal by Friday, especially for the coast and coastal valleys, according to forecasters.
