Tommaso Ciampa Wins the NXT Championship, New Takeover Match

Although not everyone is a fan of Tommaso Ciampa’s recent actions, there is no denying that he has been firing on all cylinders ever since he returned from to the ring from an injury earlier this year. Ciampa has been involved in a feud against his former tag team partner Johnny Gargano over the past few months in a rivalry that could arguably go down as the feud of the year in WWE, but after winning a Street Fight against Gargano at NXT Takeover: Chicago back in June, Ciampa earned himself a shot at the NXT Championship for the first time in his WWE career. After several weeks of buildup, Aleister Black put his title on the line in a match against Ciampa in the main event of last night’s edition of NXT.

Ciampa promised fans that one match against Black was all that he needed to win the title, and Tomasso made good on that very promise by pinning him to win the NXT Championship. Ciampa was able to score the victory after Johnny Gargano accidentally hit Aleister Black in the head with the NXT title while the referee was lying outside of the ring unconscious. This is Ciampa’s first reign as champion, and he is also now the 14th titleholder in NXT’s history. WWE recognizes Aleister Black’s reign with the title as lasting 109 days. Ciampa is also the first person to win the championship in Full Sail University since Kevin Owens defeated Sami Zayn to win the belt during NXT Takeover: Rival in February of 2015. Of course, Ciampa was quick to comment on his win on social media not long after he was crowned champion.

During last week’s episode of NXT, Kairi Sane defeated Candice LeRae and Nikki Cross to earn a shot at the NXT Women’s Championship in the near future. That match now appears to be set as both Sane and current champion Shayna Baslzer took part in a contract signing on NXT last night that saw both women agreeing to face each other at NXT Takeover: Brooklyn on the night before SummerSlam this August. Sane defeated Baszler to win the Mae Young Classic tournament last year, but Baszler also defeated Sane on NXT earlier this year. The two of them will now be having the rubber match during the next NXT Takeover event, and the NXT Women’s Championship will be on the line this time around.
