To Cut Costs, Amazon To Lay Off Over 18,000 Employees, Says CEO

Amazon plans to lay off more than 18,000 employees as the global economic outlook worsens. Several teams will be affected, including the human resources department, the company’s e-commerce and Amazon Stores, according to a memo from CEO Andy Jassy shared with employees.

He added the announcement was brought forward “because one of our teammates leaked this information externally”.

6% of the company’s workforce

The job cuts amount to around 6% of the company’s roughly 300,000-strong corporate workforce.

Amazon is the latest big technology firm to unveil major layoffs as the cost of living crisis sees customers cut back on spending.

“We are working to support those who are affected and are providing packages that include a separation payment, transitional health insurance benefits, and external job placement support,” Jassy said in a message to staff.

The move comes after the technology giant said last year that it would reduce its headcount without determining how many jobs would be cut.

Who will be fired?

Jassy did not specify where affected employees were located, but he said the firm would communicate with organisations that represent employees “where applicable in Europe”.

He also said the “majority of role eliminations” would be in the Amazon Stores operations and its People, Experience, and Technology team.

The company began letting staff go in November from its devices division, with reports saying it was targeting around 10,000 cuts at the time.

The tech industry shed more than 1,50,000 workers in 2022, according to tracking site Layoffs.fyi, a number that’s continuing to grow.

Amazon layoffs

Salesforce Inc (CRM.N) said Wednesday it planned to eliminate about 10% of staff, which numbered nearly 8,000 as of Oct 31.

The reversal of Amazon’s fortunes has been stark. It changed from a business deemed essential during the pandemic for delivering goods to locked-down homes to a company overbuilt for demand. Its layoffs now surpass the 11,000 cuts announced last year by Facebook-parent Meta Platforms Inc (META.O).
