The Joke Prince Charles Made After Prince Harry’s Birth That Broke Princess Diana’s Heart

Before Princess Diana and Prince Charles divorced, their family life with their two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, seemed royally blissful. But now we know better.

Things were fractured long before Charles and Diana divorced, and part of the straw that broke the camel’s back involved Harry’s birthday. Things were allegedly looking up in the gap between William and Harry’s births, but that quickly changed — partially because Charles was so hell-bent on having a baby girl.

AOL reports that Charles “desperately” wanted a daughter, but Diana already knew they were having a boy. The outlet says she kept Harry’s sex a secret, but once he was born, Charles reacted … and his words were heartbreaking.

“Charles always wanted a girl,” Diana allegedly said in retrospect, according to Diana: Her True Story. “Harry was a boy. His first comment was, ‘Oh God, it’s a boy.’ His second: ‘And he’s even got red hair.'”

Prince Charles apparently thought his comments were jokey, but Diana decidedly did not, and it allegedly caused the two already-strained people to grow even more distant.

Eventually, Charles got not a daughter, but a granddaughter in Princess Charlotte. Before her birth, he hinted that he was keeping his fingers crossed for a girl, and when it happened, he was overjoyed.

“I was hoping for a granddaughter — someone to look after me when I am very old,” he said, according to People.
