Southampton reject Marseille approach for Sékou Mara

The Premier League’s bottom-placed side Southampton have rebuffed Olympique de Marseille’s loan approach for French striker Sékou Mara (20), according to a report from Foot Mercato.

Marseille are in search of attacking options following the departures of out-of-favour strikers Luis Suárez (25) to Almería and Bamba Dieng (22) to Lorient. Marseille were in the running to sign Lorient’s Terem Moffi (23) in a Dieng plus cash deal, but the Nigerian forward will join Ineos-owned OGC Nice in a €30m deal.

Marseille were reportedly in talks over the signing of young Portuguese prospect Vitinha, but Braga would not budge on their €30m asking price. Iranian striker Sardar Azmoun (28) has reportedly given a green light over a move to the Vélodrome side.

Mara signed for Southampton last summer on a four-year deal for a €13m transfer fee. The Bordeaux youth product has played fourteen Premier League with the Saints. He has scored only one goal this season, against Manchester City in a Carabao Cup tie. The Southampton hierarchy appears to rely on him for the second half of the season as the Nathan Jones-led side must keep all of their forces to steer clear of relegation to the Championship.
