Sopranos Prequel Movie Casts James Gandolfini’s Son as Young Tony Soprano

The upcoming prequel movie to the Sopranos has cast James Gandolfini’s son to play the young version of his famous character, Tony Soprano.

Deadline reports Michael Gandolfini has been cast to take on his late father’s iconic role after an extensive audition process. Reportedly, Gandolfini had the screen presence and ability to replicate the original Tony Soprano’s mannerisms, which when coupled with his family resemblance made him the standout choice.

“It’s a profound honor to continue my dad’s legacy while stepping into the shoes of a young Tony Soprano,” Gandolfini told Deadline. “I’m thrilled that I’m going to have the opportunity to work with David Chase and the incredible company of talent he has assembled for The Many Saints of Newark.”

Gandolfini joins Alessandro Nivola who plays one of young Tony Soprano’s mentors Dickie Moltisanti. Vera Farmiga, Jon Bernthal, Billy Magnussen, and Corey Stoll have also made the cast and Alan Taylor will direct.

The movie, which was announced early last year, is set to be titled The Many Saints of Newark. It’s set in the 60’s following rivalries between African-American and Italian gangs of the time.
