Several Scams Reported In Nutley: Taxes, Phone, Email, Credit Card

NUTLEY, NJ — Multiple cases of fraud and other scams were recently reported in Nutley, authorities say.

According to the Nutley Police Department, the following incidents recently took place in the township:

Feb. 17 (Theft of Identity, Hilton Street) – “A party responded to headquarters to report a theft of identity. They stated when they attempted to file their taxes, they were advised someone had already done so under their Social Security Number. The victim has been in contact with their financial institutions as well as the IRS and none of their accounts appeared to be compromised at the time. They were offered the opportunity to be entered as an Identity Theft Victim.”

Feb. 17 (Fraud, Plymouth Road) – “A party responded to headquarters to report an incident of fraud. They stated they received a phone bill that was not through their account and under an unknown individual’s name. They contacted the phone company who advised them to file a police report. The victim was offered the opportunity to be entered as an Identity Theft victim, which they declined at the time.”

Feb. 18 (Suspicious Incident, Highfield Lane) – “A resident responded to headquarters to report an email scam. They stated they received an email from what appeared to be their own account requesting $500 in cryptocurrency. They stated no other accounts have been compromised. The party advised they will be changing all appropriate accounts and passwords associated with their email.”

Feb. 20 (Fraud, Darling Avenue) – “A business owner contacted headquarters to report fraudulent charges on a stolen credit card. They stated they had three charges for approximately $10,000 in total to which the person was going to arrive to pick up proceeds. The owner of the card stated they contacted their bank to cancel the credit card and they were advised to monitor all personal accounts. Police were able to intercept the parties responding to take possession of proceeds however both appeared to have been solicited through a third party to transport investigation is ongoing.”
