PITTSBURGH, PA — Leon’s Caribbean Restaurant in the city’s Allentown section is looking for a larger location and wants to purchase the former Pittsburgh Irish Centre in Squirrel Hill.
“We want to turn the Irish Centre of Pittsburgh into an island paradise,” a post on the restaurant’s Facebook page stated. “Food and drinks, host events, utilize the pool during hot summer days, etc. Give the city what’s been missing since (the center) closed several years ago.
“That place would be perfect for our vision.”
The restaurant owners are looking for partners and investors to raise enough money to purchase the building, located on Forward Avenue above Frick Park.
The restaurant does have competition for the property.
Phipps Conservatory last September contacted city officials about purchasing the space and using it for community and agricultural purposes.
The letter came as Craft Development Group’s attempts to move forward with a 160-unit apartment complex on the property failed after the company could not obtain a zoning variance for the project. There was considerable community opposition to that project.
