Some may know him as a wrestling coach, some may know him from being their instructor when they took golf, tennis, bowling or other physical education classes at Anoka-Ramsey Community College, others could know him as their landlord or realtor. But once you know him, you do not forget him. He has a presence. A rather rough exterior but one that is fair, caring, and stands by his friends. True blue!
However, now his color is purple–purple for the color representing pancreatic cancer.
Gary Wellner was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the spring of 2009. He had surgery and was one of the lucky ones–it went into remission. Unfortunately, it came back, and he is in his biggest, toughest, hardest “match” ever.
Pancreatic cancer is the fourth cancer killer with lung cancer first, followed by breast cancer, and colon cancer. It is a cancer that is becoming more prevalent and will soon be the second cancer killer. Where will this silent killer strike next? Your father, mother, sister, brother, grandmother, grandfather, son, daughter, or maybe even you.
Once Gary discovered he had this terrible cancer, he set out to help others. Even if it would not save him, he wanted to help others if they should get it. Along with Gary, his family put on a fundraiser in Excelsior “Don’t Stop Believin.” They have held two of these fundraisers. Gary has also had his very own fundraising event. Last year was the first annual “Putting for Pancreatic Cancer Research” golf tournament. The second annual golf tournament will be September 19, 2014, 1 p.m. at Majestic Oaks. The cost per golfer is $125 which includes 18 holes of golf, golf cart, fabulous dinner, golfing prizes, silent auction and a raffle. Great prizes and items (donated by area businesses and community members) for the silent auction and raffle will be there for the golfers to try and take home!
After expenses, all of the money raised will be donated to the U of M Foundation for pancreatic cancer research.
Come on out and be a part of curing this dreaded disease. We have lost enough of our loved ones. Let’s not lose any more!

Let’s putt our way to a cure!!!
