JOLIET, IL — The American Demolition Company hired by Will County government at a cost of nearly $1.5 million is nearing the final stretch of tearing down the former Will County Courthouse in downtown Joliet. On Wednesday afternoon, several sheriff’s deputies assigned to the courthouse predicted the demolition will be finished by the end of April.
The Carol Stream-based American Demolition contractors have worked on the courthouse project since December, when the interior demolition of the four-story concrete building began.
Although nothing is set in stone in terms of its future use, Joliet Patch has previously reported that Joliet Mayor Terry D’Arcy and Will County Executive Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant are exploring the idea of building a new city and county government campus on the property.
Right now, Will County has about 700,000 residents and Joliet, the third-largest city in Illinois, has more than 150,00 citizens. In the coming years, D’Arcy said Joliet will reach 200,000 citizens, so it’s important Joliet, as the county seat, develop a long-range comprehensive plan that is proactive and not reactive in terms of its continuing population growth.
“The idea of a government campus does make sense in a growing county and community,” D’Arcy told Joliet Patch last June.
As for Will County, its government offices building remain at the former Sears department store, which was built in 1947. The county has occupied it since the 1980s.
