Not Forgotten: Susan Summer Jones: Always Up For An Adventure

Rebecca “Sue” Summers Jones, who grew up in Royerford, passed away after a brief illness on April 29, at 80.

She graduated from Spring-Ford Junior and Senior High School in 1960. A friend remembered Sue as “one of the most beautiful girls in the school.”

“She also had the most welcoming smile and sparkling personality,” the friend said.

In her high school yearbook, it said “Suzi” as everyone knows, succeeds in whatever she undertakes. Her vibrant personality lends itself to the situation.

Sue was also a straight-A student, played field hockey and basketball, and was named best dressed and top student in her class.

She also did a live shampoo commercial on American Bandstand and some say she may even have been seen in the science picture movie, “The Blob,” filmed in Phoenixville in 1958.

Sue graduated from West Chester University in 1964.

She then embarked on a 51-year career in education – 50 of it in Hopewell, where she taught, worked in the school board office, and was a principal of Dupont and Patrick Copeland elementary schools.

Sue enjoyed music concerts – finally seeing her favorite, Joan Baez, singing along with Willie Nelson on her 80th birthday, and jamming to her son-in-law’s bands. She supported local theater events – especially when her grandchildren were a part of the production.

Her smile, her laugh, and her always open ear will be missed dearly.

Sue was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, H. Randolph Jones, Jr., and her parents, Paul and Polly Summers.

The family is planning a celebration of Sue’s life from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, July 16 at the Broadway Building, 236 East Broadway, Hopewell, Vir.
