Après Kirk Douglas, décédé le 5 avril 2020 à l’âge de 103 ans, c’est une autre grande star d’Hollywood qui vient de s’éteindre. Olivia de Havilland est morte le dimanche 26 juillet 2020 à Paris, où elle résidait, à l’âge de 104 ans. La triste nouvelle de sa disparition a été annoncée par son agente.
“Dame Olivia de Havilland est décédée paisiblement de causes naturelles“, a déclaré l’agente américaine Lisa Goldberg dans un communiqué, au sujet de la comédienne deux fois primée par l’Oscar de la meilleure actrice. Elle s’est éteinte dans sa résidence parisienne, en France, où elle vivait depuis le début des années 1950, a-t-elle ajouté, précisant que des funérailles strictement “privées” seraient organisées.
En France, elle avait été mariée au journaliste de Paris Match Pierre Galante, après une première union avec le scénariste américain Marcus Goodrich. Le président Nicolas Sarkozy lui avais remis la Légion d’honneur en 2010.
Inoubliable Mélanie de l’énorme succès Autant en emporte le vent (1939) de Victor Fleming, elle était la doyenne de Hollywood, dont elle incarnait l’âge d’or des années 1930-1940. Plusieurs fois nommée, Olivia de Havilland a décroché l’Oscar de la meilleure actrice pour A chacun son destin (Mitchell Leisen, 1946) et L’Héritière (William Wyler, 1949).
L’académie des Oscars a salué sur Twitter “une vraie légende de l’industrie” cinématographique, “un pilier de l’âge d’or de Hollywood et un talent incommensurable“.
The legendary Olivia de Havilland passed away yesterday. She was 104. Olivia made a powerful impact in my life and I had the pleasure to spend some time with her in Paris. I thanked her for her bravery and shared how her choices affected me and my brother and gave us opportunities to fight for our creative freedom. She was a class act. I still have the kind and thoughtful letters she wrote me in longhand on beautiful blue stationery. They were of another era. Here’s an excerpt from an interview I did some time ago… We discovered that, despite having sold millions of records, not only were we not going to get paid a penny by our record company, but we were also millions and millions of dollars in debt. We educated ourselves and found out that in California there’s a specific labor law which states that you can’t be bound to a contract for more than seven years. At that time we were signed for nine years. So we used that labor law as a major source of leverage in our battle. It is called the De Havilland Law and was put into place thanks to the bravery of Olivia De Havilland in the 1940s. I ended up meeting with her in Paris, and we had a wonderful time together. I got to thank her for fighting the system back then so I could battle it now. It was amazing to meet her she’s a legend. We made a movie about our fight, it’s called Artifact.
