Ming, Tiger Rescued From Harlem Home, Dies At 19: Reports

HARLEM, NY — New York celebrity tiger Ming, whose rescue from a Harlem public housing building in 2003 captivated the city tabloids, died recently at an Ohio animal sanctuary at the advanced age of 19, according to reports.

Ming was laid to rest at the Hartsdale Pet Cemetery in Westchester County, the New York Post first reported. The tiger’s headstone features a photo of the tiger-turned-housecat and an inscription that references its upbringing in Harlem’s Drew Hamilton Houses, according to the report. Ming’s tomb is engraved with the honor “Tiger of Harlem,” and his grave points toward his longtime home of New York City, the New York Times reported.

The tiger died in February of old age after living out most of its 19 years at the Noah’s Lost Ark animal sanctuary in Ohio, a spokesman fort the Hartsdale Pet Cemetery said. Ming lived among dozens of other tigers with names such as Bubba, Bambam and Zeus at the rural Ohio sanctuary.

Ming’s dramatic rescue from the fifth-floor apartment of former owner Antoine Yates made front page news in 2003. Police received a tip from Yates’ neighbor about the exotic pet living in the public housing building, prompting officers from the city’s Emergency Services Unit to respond to the home and tanquilize Ming, the Post reported. It took six officers to carry the Bengal Tiger out of the Harlem apartment, according to reports.

Yates described Ming’s death as “devastating” in an interview with the Post.

“I’ve never had a chance to reunite with him so that’s very disappointing, it’s hard to swallow,” Yates told the Post.

The former New York City cab driver served a three-month sentence in Rikers Island for reckless endangerment and now lives with his mother in a Philadelphia suburb, the Times reported. Yates’ mother told the newspaper she never felt her son’s exotic pet put anybody in danger.

“He was tame — he was a good pet,” Martha Yates told the Times. “They got along good together.”
