Michelle Obama Voted Most Admired Woman By Americans

CHICAGO — Former first lady Michelle Obama was voted the most admired woman by Americans this year in a Gallup poll released Thursday. For the first time in 17 years, Hillary Clinton has been bumped from the top spot on the list.

Gallup’s open-ended question asked Americans to name the woman they admire most, and 15 percent of Americans named Obama.

Oprah Winfrey was mentioned five percent of the time, and Hillary Clinton and Melania Trump tied, each receiving four percent of mentions.

Other mentions included Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Queen Elizabeth, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley.

Clinton was named the most admired woman during the first two terms of her husband Bill Clinton’s presidency in 1993 and 1994. She was then voted into the top spot from 1997 to 2000, and from 2002 to 2017.

Gallup noted that Obama finished second to Clinton three times before.

Gallup conducted their annual survey from Dec. 3 to 12 this year. Gallup has conducted the poll annually since 1946, with the exception of 1976.

Obama has been touring the United States promoting her best-selling memoir “Becoming.” The book tour kicked off in her native Chicago.
