MULLICA HILL, NJ — A roadway collapse led to significant flooding that left several residents stranded Friday morning in Gloucester County.
The collapse occurred at about 7:30 a.m. at Mill and Swamp Roads in the Mullica Hill section of Harrison Township. The failure led to flooding from the Raccoon Creek tributary and caused several power outages, officials said.
Evacuations of three impacted homes were being coordinated as of 10 a.m., according to the Gloucester County Office of Emergency Management.
Overhead footage from Action News showed a massive hole in the roadway.
Investigation revealed that the drainage of a rain culvert had been clogged, causing its rainwater to flow under a section of Swamp Road, police said. The culvert gave way on Friday morning, and all of the retained water was released toward the creek.
This caused a large portion of the roadway to collapse, bringing down power lines.
No injuries have been reported, and no homes were damaged. A small number of homes lost power, but the township only has one outage as of late Friday morning, according to Atlantic City Electric.
Local and county agencies are on-scene, along with Atlantic City Electric, the New Jersey Department of Transportation and NJ American Water. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has been notified.
During restoration and cleanup efforts, Mill Road will remain closed between North Main Street and Mullica Hill Road.
