Marseille boss opens up on Samuel Gigot’s red card after foul on Neymar

Marseille defender Samuel Gigot picked up a direct red card for his foul on Neymar in the 72nd minute of Sunday’s Le Classique. With OM going down to 10 men, Igor Tudor’s side lost the urge to mount a comeback as Paris Saint-Germain were leading 1-0 on the scoreline.

In the post-match press conference, Tudor was asked about the referee’s decision to show Gigot a red card. But mentioning that he had not seen the tackle, the Croat was told the defender had not touched Neymar. As quoted by L’Équipe, Tudor commented,

“I didn’t see it, but I was told that he (Gigot) didn’t touch the player (Neymar). I have to look at the pictures. If you give a red card because he touched him, that’s normal. But if it’s just to punish the intention, it’s a mistake.”

Gigot did not start the match but came onto the pitch after Eric Bailly had to be withdrawn due to some fitness issues in the 44th minute of the game. With OM losing on Sunday, the gap between first-placed PSG and fourth-placed Marseille in the Ligue 1 table increases to six points.
