The Times led with a story on European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker reportedly being embroiled in a criminal probe into allegations his officials tampered with evidence in a wire-tapping investigation. The incident happened a decade ago when Juncker was prime minister of Luxembourg. The Guardian featured a story on how corporate spies target activists. The Financial Times reported that Disney and Fox are nearing a $60-billion takeover deal.

France

The French press led with the One Planet summit in Paris, a financed-focused climate meeting. Le Monde said President Emmanuel Macron had warned the world needed to urgently “stop the exploitation of fossil resources.” Le Monde also reported that Xavier Bertrand, president of the Hauts-de-France region, announced he had quit Les Républicains. Le Figaro featured a report on construction plans for the new Notre-Dame-des-Landes airport near the city of Nantes, calling it “Macron’s headache.”

Germany

“How social can the GroKo be?” asked Die Tageszeitung, referring to the first meeting of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives with Martin Schulz’s Social Democrats to discuss forming another grand coalition (dubbed the GroKo by the local press). Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung also reported on Wednesday’s coalition talks, quoting the CDU’s Volker Bouffier saying his party would not be the SPD’s “therapy group.” Die Welt reported the parties’ confidence in each other would be tested.

Belgium

Dutch-speaking De Morgen led with a story on Belgium’s “energy pact” to become more green and eco-friendly. The newspaper also reported on U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to send astronauts to the moon again. Le Soir’s front page focused on Belgium’s move to phase out nuclear plants.

Spain

ABC’s front page story was on a plan, seized by Spain’s Civil Guard, which showed leaders of the Catalan secessionist movement in 2016 feared an economic “disaster” and electoral “ridicule” if they went ahead with an independence referendum. El País reported on Emmanuel Macron’s statement that the world “is losing its fight against climate change.”
