Meghan Markle is not one to shy away from a style risk. From the beginnings of her relationship with Prince Harry, the former actress wore what made her feel comfortable, ignoring those tedious royal fashion rules.
And now, even as the newly-minted Duchess of Sussex, Markle is bending the boundaries with her sartorial choices. Case in point: The off-the-shoulder dress she wore the Queen’s 92nd birthday parade aka the annual Trooping the Colour tradition.
At the very important celebration, Meghan opted for a custom Carolina Herrera ensemble that bared her shoulders and arms, which apparently is a no-no for royal women at the yearly event—at least until now.

The short-sleeve number defied the customary long sleeve variations sister-in-law Kate Middleton has worn since her Trooping debut in 2011. From a tailored white coat dress to a blazer-skirt combo, Kate has always kept her arms covered.
At the annual Trooping the Colour event,Prince William and Kate Middleton’s two children nabbed plenty of attention during their first appearance together on the balcony of Buckingham Palace. The tiny princess waved and squinted as she looked up at the sky to see the Royal Air Force’s flypast.

Since her first appearance in 1981, Princess Diana also maintained royal tradition by wearing dresses with sleeves that went past her elbows during the Queen’s public birthday celebration.
Meghan appears to have an affinity for an off-the-shoulder style. In January, the new royal wore a plaid Theory blazer that offered a hint of collarbone, and at her wedding to Prince Harry last month, her custom Givenchy gown mimicked a similar neckline.
With an American joining the monarchy, it seems as if century-old customs are going to get a modern makeover. Keep doing you, Meghan!
