Houston Teen Dies Days After Fight Outside Middle School

HOUSTON — A 13-year-old girl who was involved in a fight with two middle school students on April 18, has died after several days on life support at Texas Children’s Hospital.

Kashala Francis, who was a seventh-grade student at Attucks Middle School, died from complications related to a brain tumor and fluid build-up on her brain, doctors said Wednesday.

Authorities have not said if the girl’s death was connected to the fight outside the middle school in Houston, but her mother, Mamie Jackson, told news station KTRK that Kashala was fine before the fight.

Jackson said her daughter was attacked and severely beaten by two classmates as she walked home from school on April 18. When she got home that afternoon, she told her mother about the fight, and told her that another girl kicked her in the head while she was on the ground.

Jackson told KTRK that Kashala’s face was bruised from the fight, but her daughter insisted she was fine.

She got through the day Friday without problems, but on Saturday Kashala was visiting a family member’s home when she became disoriented momentarily. She seemed fine later on and stayed the night, Jackson said.

Kashala’s condition worsened on Sunday and she called her mother and complained of a headache. Jackson said she drove to the home where Kashala was staying and tried to coax her out of bed, but the pain was unbearable for Kashala, and she closed her eyes and became unresponsive.

Emergency crews rushed Kashala to Texas Children’s Hospital, where doctors discovered a large tumor in the back of her head and fluid build-up on her brain. Officials said they are not sure if the tumor was there for a while, or the fight contributed to her death.

Kashala went through several surgeries and was taken off life support on Wednesday.

Houston Independent School District officials said in a statement that they were aware of the fight and the Houston Police Department is investigating.

Meanwhile, the family has set up a Facebook donation page and has raised $3,500 of a $10,000 fundraising goal to pay for funeral expenses.
