WINCHESTER, CA — When it rains, it pours, and this week, rainwater flooded local parks and streets and filled Canyon Lake to the point of the overflowing spillway.
The waterfall event was captured on camera by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department’s Aviation crew from their helicopter and shared over social media.
“Our crew caught the Canyon Lake Waterfall in full effect today,” the aviation crew said in their post.
Elsewhere in Riverside County, excessive amounts of rain have flooded city parks and streets, and some residents chose to have a little fun with it during the short-lived flood.
Winchester’s Sheffield Park is a 14-acre park used for baseball, softball, and soccer games and practices managed by Valley-Wide Recreation and Park District.
The park, located at Pourroy Road and Genoa Street, commonly floods when it rains, but nearby residents tell us it’s been a while since it filled this full.
This week, it returned to what neighbors call “Lake Sheffield.”
The park can fill with water during large storms due to its construction. The slope of the land allows the park to ultimately drain itself, which typically takes about a day, they said.

Not to let an opportunity go by, one resident even hauled out the jetski for a few laps around the new water feature.
If you plan to try a similar antic, we suggest you leave the jetski at home.
The park thoroughly drained the day after this video was taken.
