Juha Sipilä says ‘formation of different political cores’ not in Finland’s interests.

Finnish Prime Minister Juha Sipilä on Friday warned against the creation of a two-speed European Union, one of the options outlined by Jean-Claude Juncker this week.

“The main line is that we should all proceed together … unity is now important, and all members should take part in future decisions as much as possible,” Sipilä told Reuters.

His comments come after the European Commission president on Wednesday outlined 5 different scenarios for the future direction of the EU.

Sipilä said the “formation of different political cores” was not in Finland’s interests.

“Many of the proposed changes would require the re-opening of the EU Treaties. This would mean a multi-year negotiation process with no certainty about its results. The Union cannot afford this,” Sipilä said.

The leaders of the EU27 will discuss Juncker’s scenarios on March 25, when they meet to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Rome.
