FAIRFIELD, CT — The Fairfield Police Department is looking to spend $108,000 on external surveillance cameras and equipment to help with safety along the corridors leading to the town’s schools.
During a Board of Selectpersons meeting earlier this week, Fairfield Police Chief Robert Kalamaras said the department is looking to add 18 cameras near schools under the Police Safe Corridor Program.
Currently, the department has 12 cameras that not only can help detect a potential incident at a school, but can also offer surveillance of nearby businesses or buildings.
Kalamaras did not disclose where the cameras are placed, and where the new ones would be installed, but said the Fairfield effort would resemble a similar initiative in Bridgeport, where cameras are strategically placed along corridors leading toward schools.
“It’s an early detection system that would assist in mitigating any threats to the school system,” Kalamaras said.
He told the board that the current cameras also helped the department with the apprehension of a suspect who tried to burglarize several downtown businesses.
“We think it will continue to be successful for the program that we currently have in place,” Kalamaras said.

The funding will come out of leftover American Rescue Plan Act money that the town received to help battle the coronavirus pandemic.
Fairfield has about $1 million in leftover ARPA funds that have not yet been allocated, according to town Chief Financial Officer Jared Schmitt.
The Safe Corridor program ties into recent efforts by the Fairfield Board of Education to upgrade its school security initiatives. The school system recently received $355,000 for school security, which it is working with the police department to implement.
