Dragons Travel to No. 2 St. Cloud State for Thursday Dual

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team returns to the Midwest to face its toughest test of the dual season on Thursday when it competes at No. 2-ranked St. Cloud State. The match begins at 7 p.m. in St. Cloud, Minn.

The Dragons are 4-4 in duals this season and 0-3 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The Huskies are 13-2 overall and 4-0 in the conference entering the week.

MSUM competed twice on the West Coast last weekend. The Dragons are led by sophomore Blake Bosch, who is ranked No. 8 in the nation and is 17-7 at 133 pounds. Senior Michael Joseph is 16-8 at 174 pounds while sophomore Garret Hoffner is 11-5 at 157 pounds. Sophomore Isaac Novacek is 13-8 at 149 pounds while sophomore Shane Novak is 10-6 at 125.

Kris Nelson is in his sixth season as MSUM’s head coach.

About St. Cloud State: The Huskies, ranked second nationally in the latest Division II poll, are 13-2 overall in duals and 4-0 in the NSIC. They rolled to a 44-2 win over Minot State on Saturday to extend their winning streak to eight matches. St. Cloud State has five wrestlers ranked nationally, including junior Clint Poster, who is 23-0 and ranked No. 2 at 157 pounds. Sophomore Austin Goergen is ranked No. 3 at 285 pounds and is 22-1, while junior Gabe Fogarty is 14-2 and ranked No. 3 at 165. Steve Costanzo is in his ninth season as St. Cloud State’s head coach.

Last Time Out: Dragons Compete on West Coast The Dragons competed in two events in San Francisco, Calif., last week. MSUM rolled to a 49-0 rout of Simon Fraser in a dual on Friday and then had three wrestlers place at the California Collegiate Open on Saturday.
In the win over Simon Fraser, the Dragons benefitted from four forfeits on their way to the convincing win. Senior Shawn Porter won by fall at 184 for MSUM while junior Chris Bascon (197) and sophomore Garret Hoffner (157) each won by technical fall to spur the Dragons.

A day later, sophomore Blake Bosch led the Dragons at the California Collegiate Open with a runner-up finish. Hoffner (157) and senior Michael Joseph (174) each placed fourth in their respective classes.

Bosch had a bye in the first round at 125 and then beat Trent Smith of Cal Baptist, 6-3. In the semifinals, the sophomore topped Southern Oregon’s Devin Poppen, 6-2 before falling in the finals to Division I wrestler Joey Palmer of Oregon State, 11-3.

Hoffner also had a first-round bye and then beat unattached wrestler Tim Navarrette, 7-4 in the quarterfinals at 157. Hoffner lost a tough 4-2 decision to Cal Poly’s Joe Granger in the semifinals. He came back with a 9-4 win over Cal Baptist’s Sergio Enloe before falling to Spencer Hill of Bakersfield, 6-5 in the third-place match.

Joseph finished the day 4-2. He opened with decision wins over Reed Tennyson of Southern Oregon (4-1) and Gabe Fuentes of San Francisco (5-1) to advance to the semifinals. Joseph fell to Sohrab Movahedi (Cal Poly), 7-5 before rebounding with back-to-back wins over Jesus Ambriz of Cal State-Bakersfield (5-3) and Calvin Nicholls of San Francisco State by fall (4:37) and then topped Cody Jones of Southern Oregon (3-1) before losing to Stanford’s Dylan Morris (7-1).
