Donald Trump has signed a bill to end the US Government shutdown which lasted for a record 35 days – smashing the previous record of 21 days set by Bill Clinton in 1996.

The shutdown affected some 800,000 US workers, many of whom were forced into unpaid leave – referred to as a furlough – while others were forced to work without pay.

Including the two shutdowns at the beginning of 2018, Trump has now overseen a total of 39 days of government shutdowns, also a record.

The president finally decided to end the shutdown on Friday following wide spread reports of government workers struggling to cope with the sudden hardship, despite repeatedly stating that he would not back down.
