Defendant Attacks Attorney In Contra Costa Courtroom: Officials

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA —A defendant in a homicide trial is facing more charges in connection with a courtroom attack Monday, authorities confirmed.

“This morning at about 10:54, during a homicide trial at the A.F. Bray Courthouse in Martinez, inmate Ramello Randle attacked his attorney with a pen,” Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Spokesperson Jimmy Lee said.

Randle, 28, of Oakland, then went to attack a deputy district attorney who was able to push him off, Lee said.

The courtroom was immediately cleared and the fire department responded to assess both of the attorneys, who refused medical attention.

Randle was taken back to the Martinez jail, where he faces additional charges, including attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and battery, Lee said.

A spokesperson for the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office told Patch court security took control of the situation very shortly after Randle attacked his attorney with a pen and struck him in the neck.

“Deputy District Attorney Kevin Bell is fine and the trial will continue tomorrow at 1:35 p.m. in Department 8 (Judge John W. Kennedy),” DA’s Office Spokesperson Ted Asregadoo told Patch.
