WESTCHASE, FL — Anyone who headed out to Tampa Bay Downs Sunday, June 30, hoping to catch a horse race was in for a big surprise.

Instead of thoroughbreds rounding the race track at breakneck speeds, the course was filled with a contingent of compact corgis vying to be first to the finish line during the third annual Tampa Bay Corgi Races.

The Tampa Bay Corgi Meetup Group and other corgi meetup groups around the state take part in the race at Tampa Bay Downs, 11225 Racetrack Road, Tampa, each year to raise funds for Sunshine Corgi Rescue.

More than 80 of the small dog breed known for their short legs and courageous spirits were on hand for the race, which wasn’t quite as long as the race run by the thoroughbreds. It’s only 50 yards to the finish line.

The race consisted of 10 heats, including a senior dog heat, with eight corgis running in each heat. Afterward, the finalists in each heat competed for the title of fastest corgi. A kiddie pool was set up nearby to help the dogs cool down after their heats.

This year’s overall champion was Bandit, a 1-year-old corgi owned by Tom and Robin Hunter of Oldsmar. In addition to his trophy, the Hunters said they planned to buy Bandit a steak dinner at Cody’s Original Roadhouse as a reward for his victory.

Nine-year-old Piper, owned by Ian and Christie Forbes of Orlando, was the winner of the senior corgi race.

The race was started by Tampa Bay Corgi Meetup member Katie Vickery, who also organized the event the first two years. This year, she turned over the reins to Joe Cavanaugh of Riverview, rescue coordinator with Sunshine Corgi Rescue. He said the race generated about $3,500 for the rescue group, which fosters and places corgis and corgi mixes in loving homes.
