DICE’s core gameplay designer says changes are coming to both time-to-kill (TTK) and time-to-die (TTD).
Battlefield 5 launched last week, and players been vocal in their criticisms of TTD, saying that death currently feels too fast and frustrating with comparison to previous games in the series.
DICE core game designer, Florian Le Bihan, has tweeted that changes to both TTK and TTD are on the horizon. DICE has now posted about the issue and how it could be resolved on Reddit.
“The TTD experience is one of our high priorities right now and there are a lot of important and complex pieces that are being investigated to identify any issues in that area, including netcode,” DICE said, adding that it will be “expanding the scope” of its “investigation and improvements to other components that are directly related to the player experience when it comes to getting shot, receiving damage, etc.”
There will be a number of experimental changes that “could improve the overall experience and create a deeper gameplay,” the first of which is to run a TTK change. It’s possible that after this rolls out, players will be able to choose between servers with the old and new TTK to “compare the two experiences.”
The devs have confirmed that these changes won’t be rolling out in the Tides of War: Overture update next week, but there will be some balance tweaks to weapons that may help.
The developer touched on the TTK and TTD in a post giving players a sneak peek at what they can expect in the update.
“TTK and TTD are very closely linked. We’re seeing players die too often/too quickly and get frustrated because of it. So, we’re looking at how we can improve the experience for new players and veterans alike. This may lead to a perceived slower TTK.
“We’re investigating all elements that play into TTD, from netcode to damage feedback/other components that influence TTD perceptions.
“We want to achieve gunplay balance where the experience is healthy, where latency is in a good place in order to improve consistency experience across all platforms including PC and Console.”
Meanwhile, the Overture update will improve the revive mechanic for players on both ends. The revive speed itself isn’t being increased just yet, but DICE has said that it has “identified a few delays that prevented players to get full control after the animation was completed – this is now resolved and will virtually make the reviving experience ‘faster’.”
Medics will be getting weapon balance changes to make them better at range, including improvements to the SMG’s accuracy “while aimed and stationary,” increasing the “5-hit kill range of SMGs to 30m instead of 25m,” as well as “increased muzzle velocity and reduced bullet drag to allow more consistent range combat.”
There’s a slew of general weapon balances, UI changes, and two new features coming to Spectator Mode, with the Look at Player Free Camera Option, that will see the camera rotate to “always be looking at that soldier/vehicle that’s selected in the center player card,” making it handy for cinematic videos.
Tides of War Chapter 1: Overture drops on Tuesday, December 4.
