BERNARDSVILLE, NJ — Basking Ridge local Alexandra Daras shared a dream with her father Chris to one day open a boutique. When he suddenly died, she shelved her dream.
It took four years of pain, tears, and sadness before she decided to follow their dream and make it a reality. Now 10 years later The Pretty Pink Rooster is thriving and celebrating its anniversary beginning on Sept. 26.
“Wow, 10 years, a full decade, which is so, so amazing,” said Daras to Patch. “My story is kind of a nonconventional story of owning a business, so it’s been such a great and extraordinary run, and I’m truly blessed to be able to serve our community now for 10 years, which is awesome.”
Daras grew up in Basking Ridge where she served as a kindergarten teacher for 10 years but she had another deep-rooted passion – fashion.
“I always wanted to have my own business since I was a little girl, and I love accessorizing and jewelry and all of that stuff,” said Daras. “My dad was also a business owner in Bernardsville, and we shared this love of sales. And he and I built my business together.”

Daras and her father created a layout for a boutique that was affordable. But before the store could come to life, Chris died suddenly.
“It was really painful, so I just threw myself into teaching, and then it just kept coming back. So I said to myself, like I didn’t want to live with regret and not move forward with this beautiful idea that I did have with my dad and live with the “shoulda, woulda, coulda sisters,” said Daras.
She took the leap and opened The Pretty Pink Rooster in 2014 as an e-commerce site. The name was a nod to her father who would call himself the rooster of the family. He would also call Daras along with her three sisters and mom “chicks.”
“He loved roosters, and I jazzed up the rooster, you know, obviously making it pink, with some pearls and with some shoes to make her nice and pretty,” said Daras.
The business began to expand and she started doing pop-up parties until 2016. Daras quit her teaching job and opened her brick-and-mortar store at 115 Morristown Road in Bernardsville.
“I knew that Bernardsville had to be my location. I’m a fourth-generation business owner in Bernardsville, first woman, and I have very deep roots in our community,” said Daras.
The Pretty Pink Rooster offers all the jewelry and accessories under $50 and all of the clothing is under $200. Everything is hand-curated.
“We have beautiful pieces for anybody and everybody for whatever their day brings. That’s my mantra at the store,” said Daras.
To celebrate The Pretty Pink Rooster’s journey, Daras is hosting a few events. On Sept. 26 she will have a sip and shop from 6 to 9 p.m.
There will also be 10 big giveaways Live on her social media platforms (facebook.com/prettypinkrooster and instagram.com/prettypinkrooster) to random customers on Sept. 26 and 27 as an appreciation for shopping with Pretty Pink Rooster and supporting Daras.
On Sept. 28, the store is going to have a big party all day long for Customer Appreciation Day, where there will be exclusive sales, giveaways for all of our clients who are shopping, a DJ, and a cupcake cart.
