Author Reveals Some Original Matches Planned for WrestleMania 34

WWE returned to the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana earlier this year for WrestleMania. This year marked the second time in WWE history that WrestleMania had been held in the venue, and it featured Ronda Rousey’s in-ring debut for WWE, Daniel Bryan’s return to the ring for the first time in three years, the first WWE Championship match between Shinsuke Nakamura and AJ Styles, and a main event between Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship. It was definitely a packed show with plenty of memorable matches and moments on it, but there were a few changes and adjustments made to the event before it aired live on the WWE Network this past April.
Author Jon Robinson has been working with WWE to publish a new book titled ‘Creating The Mania: An Inside Look At How WrestleMania Comes To Life,’ and while speaking about the book with The Wrestling Estate, Robinson revealed a few interesting details about cancelled matches, original pitches, and other plans that were made for this year’s WrestleMania show.
For instance, Kevin Owens originally wanted to wrestle Vince McMahon in order to pay off an angle wherein he gave the Chairman of WWE a headbutt on SmackDown a few months prior. McMahon did not compete at WrestleMania, and Owens instead teamed up with Sami Zayn to lose to the team of Daniel Bryan and Shane McMahon.

Also, prior to his injury earlier this year, one of the original plans called for Jason Jordan to face his storyline father, Kurt Angle, in a singles match at WrestleMania. Angle ended up teaming with Ronda Rousey to defeat Triple H and Stephanie McMahon during the event.
Instead of Seth Rollins winning the Intercontinental Champion this year, Rollins would instead fight Dean Ambrose at WrestleMania. Ambrose missed the event due to an injury and only recently returned to WWE programming.
Robinson also discussed how badly The Usos wanted to be featured on the main card of WrestleMania this year. Although they got their wish, the brothers were hoping to face The New Day in a TLC match for the SmackDown Tag Team Championships. The Usos and The New Day both lost a match also involving The Bludgeon Brothers for the tag team titles during WrestleMania 34 instead.
