The No. 1-ranked team in the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III national rankings, the Auggies claimed three pins, a technical fall and a major decision in its five bout victories. The Auggies were also the benefactors of four Saint John’s forfeits in the win.

In the six bouts wrestled on Friday, Augsburg claimed a 54-9 advantage in points, shutting out Saint John’s in all five of its victories.

At 125 pounds, Augsburg’s No. 3-ranked Victor Gliva (JR, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS) improved to 22-4 on the season with a 4:20 pin of Josh Clark, building a 6-0 lead with a takedown and two 2-point near-falls in the first period, then scoring an escape and takedown early in the second period and converting for his seventh pin of the season and 14th bonus-point win (seven pins, two technical falls, five major decisions).

Augsburg’s No. 5-ranked Tanner Vassar (JR, Maple Lake, Minn./Maple Lake HS) claimed his eighth pin of the season at 174 pounds, a 3:44 match-ender over Jacob Scherber. Vassar built a 12-0 lead with a takedown, two-point near-fall and two 4-point near-falls in the first period, then turned a reversal into a pin 44 seconds into the second period. Vassar is now 18-6 on the season with 13 bonus-point wins (eight pins, two technical falls, three major decisions).

At heavyweight, Augsburg’s Timothy Mandyck (SO, Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS) improved to 17-15 on the year with his sixth pin victory of the season, scoring a pin at the 2:47 mark of the first period against J.W. Windsor. He claimed a takedown with 1:18 left in the period, then slowly worked his way to secure the pin just before the end of the frame.

At 149, No. 2-ranked Alex Wilson (SR, Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis HS) claimed his 30th victory of the season, moving to 30-5 with his 12th win by technical fall, a 17-0, second-period win over Anthony Hennen. He used a takedown and two 4-point near-falls to build a 10-0 lead after one period, the scored an escape, takedown and four-point near-fall to end the match early. Of his 30 wins, 24 are by bonus-point margins (eight pins, 12 technical falls, four major decisions). He is now 123-36 in his career.

At 141, No. 3-ranked David Flynn (JR, Jordan, Minn./Jordan HS (Scott West)) improved to 21-4 on the campaign with a dominating effort, building an incredible 5:29 riding time in a 9-0 win over Andrew Smith. He claimed a takedown in each period and controlled the action on top throughout the match, scoring his 14th bonus-point win (nine pins, one technical fall, four major decisions) of the season.

FOR THE FOES
Saint John’s lone win — and lone points scored in the match — came at 197, as Luke Dodd broke a 2-2, second-period tie with a reversal, four-point near-fall and 2:05 riding time to claim a 9-2 win over Augsburg’s Wyatt Richardson (JR, Grand Meadow, Minn./Grand Meadow HS). Dodd is now 13-5 on the season, while Richardson drops to 11-6.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE

  • Since the 1979-80 season, Augsburg is 34-4 in dual meets against Saint John’s, winning the last six matches in a row.
  • Against opponents from Divisions II and III, Augsburg is now 338-52-1 in dual meets since the 1989-90 season. Augsburg has lost just 48 matches to non-Division I opponents since the 1995-96 season.
  • Against strictly NCAA Division III opponents, Augsburg is 327-51-1 since the 1979-80 season. Since the 1989-90 season, Augsburg is 252-41-1 against Division III opponents.
  • Against opponents from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Augsburg is now 211-7 since the 1975-76 season.
