Anonymous Threats Sent To Santa Monica City Councilmembers

SANTA MONICA, CA — This week’s City Council meeting in Santa Monica will have heightened and enhanced security measures due to reports of anonymous threats sent to Councilmembers.

Santa Monica Police Department spokesperson Erika Aklufi told Patch that four councilmembers received the threats over the phone last evening and night.

“These incidents are rare, but not unheard of. I cannot tell you the last time a council member received a threat,” Aklufi said.

Attendees of tonight’s Council meeting can expect to see controlled access, screening measures and additional officers in and around the chambers. According to the city, these actions are being implemented out of an abundance of caution.

Tonight’s city council meeting will start at 5:30 p.m. at city hall in the Council Chamber, room 205.
