Addition To Roma Sports Club Planned In Frankfort

FRANKFORT, IL — At its Monday meeting, the Frankfort Village Board approved two special use permits, two variances and a final plat approval for a planned addition to the Roma Sports Club, at 9115 Roma Court.

The addition will add 20,800 square feet to the existing building to provide more indoor recreation space, according to Board documents. The parking lot will also be expanded, adding 117 spaces.

The sports club is located in East Point Park, which includes some industrial buildings.

The Plan Commission unanimously recommended both special use permits, both variances and the final plat for the project.

According to board documents, the special use permits are for indoor recreation for a health/fitness facility; and outdoor recreation over one acre for two soccer fields.

The variances are to permit three points of vehicular access to Roma Court, and a variance for the landscaped front yard setback, board documents state.

Trustee Maura Rigoni said she was concerned about the special use for the outdoor recreation for the soccer fields, since it is in an industrial area. Rigoni, who previously served on the plan commission, said forms of the project have also been before the plan commission in 2018 and 2019.

“It’s not the indoor [plans], I think the expansion looks great,” Rigoni said. “It’s that outdoor component.”

Trustee Jessica Petrow said she believed the original plans for the building had outdoor fields approved, but they weren’t constructed at that time.

Petrow said previous plans called for baseball fields, rather than soccer fields. She said she would support soccer fields, especially because there would not be balls hit outside the park or into the street.

“The soccer fields were more in line with less safety concerns,” Petrow said.

“I’m actually content with the outdoor,” Trustee Dan Rossi said. “I think it’s a better solution than a new industrial area going there.”
