Jacks poised for Harold Nichols Cyclone Open

South Dakota State will make the trek to Ames, Iowa to compete in the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open, hosted by Iowa State University. This will be the first time the Jacks will wrestle in the Cyclone Open since 2009.

LAST TIME OUT
SDSU fell to Drexel, 26-10 in its home opener last weekend. Three Jackrabbits picked up wins in the loss to the Dragons. Redshirt freshman Alex Kocer (149 pounds) recorded a 14-3 major decision win. Junior Joe Brewster (165 pounds) and freshman Brady Ayers (174 pounds) each picked up decisions on the day.

IN THE POLLS
Junior Cody Pack (157 pounds) is ranked No. 20 in this week’s WIN Magazine rankings. The returning NCAA qualifiers owns a 5-2 record on the year, including thee bonus point victories.

SOCIALLY SUPREME
South Dakota State was named the Top Newcomer in the Best of Brand Annual Achievement Awards, as presented by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, in coordination with Elite Level Sport Marketing. Jackrabbit wrestling continues to launch itself into the national spotlight through expanded use of its social media platforms and the #GetJacked mantra. To go along with its popular “Jacked Up Monday” videos, SDSU has added “Jackrabbit Wrestling: All Access” as a second weekly video. These videos are released on Thursdays and gives fans a behind-the-scenes look at the Jacks away from the mat.

LOOKING AHEAD
The Jacks will return home to close out November with duals against Nebraska (Nov. 24) and North Dakota State (Nov. 30). Start times for the duals are 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively.

PROGRAM HISTORY
2013-14 marks the 65th season of Jackrabbit wrestling. SDSU owns a 502-344-22 (.591) program record. Chris Bono is the 12th coach in Jackrabbit history and owns a 44-30 career (.595). SDSU has won six conference championships, with the last two coming in back-to-back seasons in 1996-97.

BIG BEN
Sophomore Ben Gillette (125 pounds), who dropped from 141 pounds last season, pinned Tirso Lara (Unattached) at the Daktronics Open. Gillette sits at 1-3 on the year after losing by tech fall vs. Drexel

WILL.i.am.
Senior Will James (133 pounds) went 2-2 in his Jackrabbit debut at the Dakotrics Open. James was tied for second with 21 wins wrestling unattached last season. James dropped a 16-1 technical fall vs. Drexel to fall to 2-3 on the year.

SENIORITY
After redshirting a season ago senior Eric Orozco (141 pounds) is slotted in to be the guy at 141 for the Jacks. Orozco owns a 1-3 mark this season after dropping a 6-5 decision to Drexel. Orozco went 9-8 last season wrestling unattached in open tournaments.

FRESH ON THE SCENE
Redshirt freshman Alex Kocer (149 pounds) tallied a team-best 7 wins at the Daktronics Open. Kocer, a five-time South Dakota state champion in high school, went 7-2 at the Dak Open, including a team-high three pins. Kocer continued to excel in his debut season by recording a 14-3 major decision win vs. Drexel.

LEADER OF THE PACK
Returning NCAA qualifier Cody Pack (157 pounds) began his 2013-14 campaign in style with a third-place finish at the Dak Open after going 5-1. Included in Pack’s five wins were a technical fall, a major decision and a pin. Pack dropped to 5-2 on the year with a 7-4 loss to Drexel.

NOT YOUR AVERAGE JOE
Fresh off of a 5-1 Dak Open, junior Joe Brewster (165 pounds) picked up his first dual win of the season vs. Drexel by way of an 8-6 decision.

REDSHIRT NO MORE
Freshman Brady Ayers (174 pounds) won his Jackrabbit debut vs. Drexel, 3-1. Ayers now sits at 3-2 after splitting four matches at the Daktronics Open. Ayers is the lone freshman of the highly touted No. 6 recruiting class to have his redshirt pulled.

UP FOR GRABS
Entering the season, the 184 pound slot was the lone spot up for grabs on the Jacks’ lineup card. Junior Shea Nolan got the nod vs Drexel. Nolan dropped a 6-4 decision vs. the Dragons. Nolan owns a 2-3 record heading into the Cyclone Open.

TREY IS HABLE
Redshirt freshman Trey Hable (197 pounds) owns a 2-3 record on the year after dropping a major decision vs. Drexel. Hable recorded a team-best 14 pins wrestling unattached for the Jacks last season.

THE BIG GUY
J.J. Everard (285 pounds) opened the season with three wins at the Dak Open. Everard sits a 3-4 after dropping a decision vs. Drexel.
