FIGURE FOUR WEEKLY: Figure Four Weekly 6/19/2017: Looking back at the Cruiserweight Classic one year later

Last week brought the announcement of the first four wrestlers who will be participating in WWE’s Mae Young Classic this summer. Toni Storm, Princesa Sugehit, Lacey Evans, and Sarah Logan will help make up a diverse 32-competitor field from all around the world. It was this time last year that similar announcements were being made for an almost identical project. And while WWE hopes that the Mae Young Classic will further the cause of women’s wrestling, last year’s cruiserweight tournament still leaves behind an undefined legacy.

WON BACK ISSUE: May 29, 2000 Wrestling Observer Newsletter: WWF Judgment Day review, Super J-Cup, more

It took a lot of guts in this day and age to attempt a 60:00 match. Nowadays, it’s considered gutsy to put on a 10:00 match on television and you never see anything but PPV main events last more than 20:00. The participants, Rock and HHH, went 36:28 at Wrestlemania. Several times during the broadcast of this show it was noted that both of their longest matches was a 30:04 PPV draw in 1998 which was a ***1/4 match.

MONDAY NEWS UPDATE

Bryan and I will be back tonight talking Raw as well as the latest news. We should also have time for mailbag questions that you can send to [email protected].

The G-1 lineups will be announced at tomorrow morning’s Korakuen Hall show. One would think that the Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Tetsuya Naito and Kazuchika Okada vs. Kenny Omega matches will headlining the 8/11 and 8/12 shows at Sumo Hall.

Paul Heyman has pushed that Brock Lesnar is looking for a fight with Samoa Joe tonight.

UFC is cancelling its August PPV. The date was scheduled for 8/19, which would be seven days before McGregor vs. Mayweather, so it made no sense to run a show that night.

Cody Rhodes on the Daniel Bryan comment on Twitter in Sports Illustrated: “I don’t think it was a challenge, just fun. Daniel Bryan remains one of my friends. Final Countdown would be a welcomed tune, even as a competitor. I have always looked up to Dan. It would be major, major box office for all involved.”

The WWE has produced Los Angeles 3:16 T-shirts to sell at the Raw tapings tonight. That has led to natural speculation about Steve Austin being there, but that hasn’t been confirmed. (thanks to Chris O’Donnell and many others)

WWE
A correction from yesterday on the two new MSG shows that were put up on the WWE Network. The Bob Backlund vs. Greg Valentine show wasn’t a cage match. Also, the November 23, 1981 Pedro Morales vs. Don Muraco IC title match was billed as a Texas death match.
The National Enquirer ran a story on Bray Wyatt’s marriage and the story of Wyatt having an affair with JoJo Offerman.
The company sent out another fan survey today to former WWE network subscribers. They are looking for info on their fan base on how loyal a fan they are, how familiar they are with current storylines, how much you like storylines, asking fans if they know who the current WWE champion is, the name of he next PPV, who are the members of New Day, if you watch Raw or SmackDown on Hulu, television, on-line, Facebook or YouTube, visit web sites to get info and ask why they aren’t signed up at this point and why you signed up in the first place, if you’d sign up with a longer free trial period and many other things. (thanks to Kevin Tomich)
Ric Flair was on the latest edition of Complex’s “Sneaker Shopping” series. Flair caught up with the crew at Stadium Goods In New York City to talk partying with Michael Jordan and his thoughts on LeBron James being the greatest athlete of all time.
UFC
Two of my friends at MMA Fighting, Esther Lin and Dave Doyle were on the Sports Illustrated LGBTQ roundtable of sports reporters.
Felice Herrig, after beating Jushine Kish, complained that at 32, she’s not young enough or beautiful enough to be promoted hard by UFC.
MISCELLANEOUS
A correction from yesterday regarding The Knight Family that wrestle in the U.K., often against each other. Roy & Zak Knight are of course the Hooligans tag team and the older brothers of Paige. Ricky Knight Jr. is the son of Roy Knight, who twice over the weekend wrestled against his father, so that would make him Paige’s nephew, not her brother. P.J. Knight is another nephew of Paige. (thanks to Stephan Lyon)
The NWL, run by Major Baisden, has changed its business plan. Originally the idea was to run every other Saturday night in Kansas City and every other Thursday night in St. Louis. St. Louis was moved from Thursday night to Sunday afternoon. Now, in August, St. Louis will run once a month. Kansas City will run every other Saturday but at two different locations, one show per month on the Kansas side and one on the Missouri side. The plan is to run 100 dates per year but move into new markets like Joplin, Springfield, MO, Des Moines, Omaha, Topeka, Salina and Tulsa. The debut in Springfield is 8/12. (thanks to Brian Hoops)
NOAH’s Kaito Kiyomiya has come to the U.S. and will be based on Ontario. He’s working for Smash Wrestling on 7/16 in Toronto at the Phoenix Concert Theater against Stu Grayson. Kevin Bennett vs. Jay White, Scotty O’Shea vs. Matt Cross, Evil Uno vs. Brent Banks and others are on the show.

Defy Wrestling runs 6/29 at the Temple Theater in Tacoma at 6 p.m. with Cody Rhodes vs. Penta 0M, plus Bobby Fish & Kyle O’Reilly vs. Davey Boy Smith Jr. & Rey Fenix, and the women’s World Cup tournament with Angelina Love, Su Yung, Christina Von Eerie and Nicole Matthews, plus Davey Richards, Shane Strickland, Matt Cross, Darby Allin and Joey Ryan.
Defy Wrestling also runs 6/30 at Washington Hall in Seattle with Fish & O’Reilly vs. Penta 0M & Fenix plus Joey Ryan, as well as Davey Richards, Shane Strickland, Davey Boy Smith Jr., Angelina Love, Su Yung, Matt Cross, Darby Allin, and more.
Anarchy Wrestling on 6/24 in Cornelia, GA before a sellout of 220 fans: Jeremy Foster b Chase Jordan, AJ Gray b Ryan Vega, Kyle Matthews b Anthony Henry, Adrian Hawkins & Bobby Moore b Joey & Matt Lynch in a taped fist match to win the tag titles Tank b Brad Cash in a Taipei death match, Rock C b Jessica Leigh to keep the women’s title, Jacob Ashworth b Stryknyn to keep the Triple Crown, Gunner Miller & Kevin Blue & Billy Buck & Chris Spectra b Gladiator Jeremiah & Cyrus the Destroyer & Seven & Azrael in a War Games match. Matt Tremont comes on 7/22 to face Tank in Tank’s farewell to the promotion after 16 years. Tremont grew up watching NWA Wildside in Cornelia and idolized Tank so this is a dream match for him.
