Vince McMahon's return boosts WWE SmackDown ratings

Buoyed by the return of Vince McMahon to television, SmackDown on Tuesday night did its best viewership since April and the fourth highest number of the year.

The show averaged 2.754 million viewers, good for second on the night on cable in both total viewership and the 18-49 demo. SmackDown trailed Tucker Carlson Tonight in total viewers and was behind American Horror Story in the demo.

SmackDown ratings were up seven percent from last week and were up almost four percent year-over-year.

The episode was built around a confrontation between Kevin Owens and Vince, stemming from the attack on Owens by Shane McMahon on last week’s show. In addition, there were three title matches advertised in advance.

SmackDown came very close to Raw’s ratings this week, retaining a much higher than usual 95 percent of Raw viewership, the highest audience retention of the year.
