Chris Jericho & Kenny Omega Nearly Joined Impact, Lawler in Cage

Impact Wrestling nearly scored itself two major signings not too long ago. According to the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, there were serious talks about Chris Jericho and Kenny Omega possibly coming in to the promotion at one point. The promotion has been in a rebuilding phase over the past couple of months, and the idea would have been to bring in Omega and Jericho as top stars. The report notes that the conversations between Impact officials and the two wrestlers were progressing nicely, and the duo came very close to signing deals with Impact. However, the biggest reason why Omega & Jericho in Impact never came to be had to do with the brand new All Elite Wrestling promotion.
The Observer says that Impact Executive Vice President Don Callis was leading the talks between Omega and Jericho. The belief is that Omega would have worked 30 dates per year for Impact while Jericho would have continued to work for Impact and New Japan Pro Wrestling. Once All Elite Wrestling entered the picture, Jericho signed with them instead, and Omega is heavily rumored to be joining the promotion soon as well. Jericho is close friends with Callis, and all three men make appearances for NJPW. Jericho even teased possibly joining Impact last year, but he confirmed earlier this year that his AEW deal is an exclusive multi-year contract. Callis continues to work for Impact Wrestling in his current role.
WWE Hall of Famer Jerry “The King” Lawler is still competing in the ring, and he can definitely still hang with some of the best talent in the business. Not only is Lawler still wrestling in singles matches, but he is still taking on matches with more hardcore stipulations. Case in point, it was just announced by USA Championship Wrestling that Lawler will be coming in to compete in a Steel Cage match. The 69 year old will be facing Matt Riviera during the promotion’s February 16th show in Jackson, Tennessee. The match is also being billed as a “Thunderdome” Steel Cage match. Lawler signed a new contract with WWE earlier this month, and he is set to call the men’s Royal Rumble match this Sunday night.
