Oxton had a successful 23-year coaching career in the sport of wrestling and served for 20 years as the SCSU head coach from 1967 to 1987. His teams carried on the tradition of success enjoyed by the Huskies with four Northern Intercollegiate Conference titles and five top 10 NCAA finishes during his career. He charted a 167-120-9 career record and his Huskies earned 34 All-America honors and 36 conference titles from 1967 to 1987. Oxton played a key role in helping make the SCSU wrestling program make the move into the highly regarded North Central Conference during the 1980s and he also served as SCSU’s men’s golf coach during his tenure on campus. As a tribute to his contributions to the program, the outstanding wrestler award at the annual Holiday Inn/Huskies Open is named in honor of John Oxton.
The 2017-18 SCSU wrestling team is currently the nation’s number one ranked NCAA Division II program. SCSU owns a 5-0, 1-0 NSIC record this season and the Huskies will continue their 2017-18 campaign on Dec. 28 with a match at nearby rival St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minn.
