Augsburg dominates in 57-0 win over St. Olaf

MINNEAPOLIS — Winning five bouts by bonus-point margins and taking advantage of five forfeits in a match that took just 31 minutes to complete, the Augsburg University men’s wrestling team scored a 57-0 dual-meet victory over St. Olaf College on Tuesday evening at Si Melby Hall.

The No. 5-ranked team in the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III national rankings, the Auggies claimed three pins, a technical fall and a major decision in its five bout victories. In the five bouts wrestled, Augsburg claimed a 42-1 advantage in points.

At 133 pounds, Augsburg’s Victor Gliva (SR, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS) improved to 5-0 with his second pin of the year, building a 10-0 lead on a takedown and two 4-point near-falls before scoring a 2:53 pin of the Oles’ Luke Wallace. Gliva, a two-time 125-pound All-American, is ranked No. 3 nationally at 125 in the latest NWCA national rankings.

At 184, No. 2-ranked Tanner Vassar (SR, Maple Lake, Minn./Maple Lake HS) needed just 1:08 to claim his third pin of the year, improving to 5-0 with a pin over Kris Kurtz. Four of Vassar’s five wins on the season have been bonus-point wins, with three pins and a technical fall.

Wyatt Richardson (SR, Grand Meadow, Minn./Grand Meadow HS) closed the match at 197 pounds with his first pin of the season, improving to 2-2 with a 1:18 pin of Robbie McGlinn II.

At 149, No. 10-ranked Aaron Wilson (SR, Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis HS) improved to 4-0 with a dominant performance in a 16-1 technical-fall win over Jack Ridgway. Wilson used three takedowns, a reversal and a four-point near-fall to claim the win, building 4:53 riding time. Wilson is now 4-0 on the season, with all four wins by bonus-point margins (three technical falls, one pin).

At 157, Jack Vaselaar (SO, Winona, Minn./Winona Cotter HS) moved to 2-2 on the season with a 12-0 major-decision win over Bryant Ridgway, scoring two takedowns, a reversal and 4:39 riding time in the victory.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE

Since the 1979-80 season, Augsburg is 32-0 in its dual meets against St. Olaf.

Against opponents from Divisions II and III, Augsburg is now 339-52-1 in dual meets since the 1989-90 season. Augsburg has lost just 48 matches to non-Division I opponents since the 1995-96 season.

Against strictly NCAA Division III opponents, Augsburg is 327-51-1 since the 1979-80 season. Since the 1989-90 season, Augsburg is 252-41-1 against Division III opponents.

Against opponents from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Augsburg is now 212-7 since the 1975-76 season.
