Italian Ranking Tournament Awaits Gophers Wrestling Club

Three members of the Gopher Wrestling Club are heading to Rome for the Matteo Pellicone ranking series event this upcoming week from January 15-18.

The list includes Tony Nelson, Pat Smith, and Hayden Zillmer. Nelson and Zillmer will compete in freestyle wrestling while Smith continues the proud Minnesota tradition of Greco-Roman grapplers.

The group will be competing under the Gopher Wrestling Club and will be coached by Dustin Schlatter, accomplished on the international stage in his own right.

All three have already qualified for the 2020 Olympic Trials. Nelson and Zillmer both qualified with top-five performances at qualifying tournaments this past year as Nelson was a finalist at the Senior Nationals while Zillmer rallied to win his bracket.

Smith qualified automatically as a 2019 World Team member.
