Constantin Film has hired 47 Meters Down director, Johannes Roberts, to write and direct the Resident Evil reboot, sources told Variety.
We found out last year that the Resident Evil film franchise would be getting a reboot, with a total of six films set to be in the line up.
Aquaman’s James Wan will be producing the first reboot, who is known for his success in the horror genre with Annabelle and Lights Out.
The previous film series for Resident Evil, which also included six films was based on the video game and starred Milla Jovovich playing the role of Alice.
The franchise has earned $1.2 billion worldwide, and is the highest-grossing film series that is based on a video game to date. The most recent and final installment in the prior franchise, Resident Evil: the Final Chapter, grossed $312 million worldwide.
Production is expected to begin sometime in 2019, with an entirely new cast. It is unknown if writer and director Paul W.S. Anderson – who directed four of the six previous films – will have any role in the rebooted franchise.
While we wait for more details to emerge about the new Resident Evil film reboot, check out the recent news on the Monster Hunter movie that Jovovich is starring in and her husband, Anderson, is directing
