LOS ANGELES, CA — In more normal times, a baseball player might appreciate such a vote of confidence from the president. But Rich Hill would rather President Trump stick to politics.
The Dodgers pitcher attempted to redirect Trump’s Twitter focus a day after Trump questioned the decision by manager Dave Roberts to lift the lefthander in the midst of a dominating World Series performance.

“Watching the Dodgers/Red Sox final innings,” Trump tweeted near the end of Saturday night’s Game 4. “It is amazing how a manager takes out a pitcher who is loose & dominating through almost 7 innings, Rich Hill of Dodgers, and brings in nervous reliever(s) who get shellacked. 4 run lead gone. Managers do it all the time, big mistake!”
Hill, a Milton, Mass., native, responded Sunday by telling reporters that Trump’s focus should have been on the shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue that left 11 dead earlier in the day.
“There was a mass shooting yesterday … The focus, in my opinion, of the president is to be on the country, and not on moves that are made in a World Series game,” Hill said.
Hill was lifted by Roberts after 6 1/3 innings of one-hit shutout baseball. The Dodgers bullpen would relinquish the lead to Boston, which won, 9-6, for a 3-1 World Series lead.
Roberts didn’t seem overly concerned with the president’s take, either.
“I’m happy he was tuning in and watching the game,” he told reporters after the game. “I don’t know how many Dodgers games he’s watched. I don’t think he was privy to the conversation. That’s one man’s opinion.”
Trump has waded into the sports arena on Twitter several times – and it rarely ends well.
He dominated the national conversation when he criticized NFL players for kneeling during the national anthem, and initiated feuds with NBA superstar LeBron James and others. He canceled the Super Bowl-wining Philadelphia Eagles’ White House trip after learning most players were not going to show up, and it’s not likely an NBA team will make it to the White House while Trump remains in office.
It’s unknown whether the Red Sox or Dodgers would attend the White House if they win.
