NARBERTH, PA —Narberth’s own John Hickenlooper is running for president. The Main Line native turned-brewery owner-turned-Denver mayor-turned Colorado governor announced his bid for the Oval Office in early March.
As candidates are want to do, Hickenlooper, a Democrat, participated in a CNN Town Hall with Dana Bash and toward the event’s close, the former geologist shared an awkward story about attending a screening of an infamous x-rated film.
The film in question: “Deep Throat,” from 1972.
Hickenlooper, 67 and a graduate of the Haverford School, told Bash the story, which is featured in his memoir.
He said when he came home from Weslyan College for Thanksgiving his freshman year, he and a friend wanted to see a movie, so he asked his mother.
Hickenlooper said he and his friend knew of x-rated movies, but were not 100 percent clear on what the “x” rating entailed.”

“We thought it was a little naughty,” he said of the x rating, “but we didn’t think it was that bad.”
His mother obliged and paid for three tickets.
“I’m sure she was mortified,” he said after mentioning the movie’s graphic opening scene.
He insisted they leave as the move got underway, but went on to say his mother said she paid for the tickets, so they would see the movie through.
“When she paid, she was going to stay,” he told Bash. “And at the end, she knew I was humiliated. And as we drove home… I said, ‘That was some experience.'”
