Severe Weather Rips Through South: 8 Dead, 18 Tornadoes Confirmed


HAMILTON, MS — Powerful storms spawning 18 tornadoes ripped through parts of the South, Midwest and East over the weekend leaving a path of death and destruction. At least eight people are dead after severe weather swept through parts of Mississippi, Texas, Alabama, North Carolina, and Georgia, as well as Ohio, Virginia and Pennsylvania.

A survey team found evidence of an EF-3 tornado with winds of at least 136 mph near Weches, Texas, the National Weather Service said. A second EF-3 twister flattened part of Franklin, Texas, on Saturday, and two smaller tornadoes also touched down in the same region.

Eight tornadoes spawned In Mississippi, The Associated Press reported. One person died in Hamilton late Saturday, Greg Michel, Monroe County emergency executive director, told The Weather Channel. Multiple injuries were also reported.

In Texas, four people were killed, including two children who died Saturday in Pollok when a tree fell on a vehicle they were in. Their parents, who were in the front seat, were not hurt. Elsewhere, a tornado touched down near Alto, Texas, fatally injuring a woman near the Caddo Mounds State Historic Site. Additionally, the Houston County Sheriff’s Office confirmed one person died from severe weather in Weches, about 6 miles southwest of Caddo Mound, the Associated Press reported.

Other victims died in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Meanwhile, much of the eastern Great Lakes and mid-Atlantic woke up Monday to damaged buildings, closed schools, and no power from the storms.

Among the victims was 13-year-old Sebastian Omar Martinez, who drowned in a drainage ditch late Saturday afternoon in West Monroe, Louisiana, the Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office told weather.com. A second person was found dead in a submerged vehicle Saturday night in Calhoun, he said. That person has not yet been named.

In Alabama, at least three weak tornadoes touched down Sunday. A Jefferson County worker was hit by a vehicle while trying to clear downed trees near Birmingham, AP reported.

The storms also forced airlines to cancel hundreds of flights at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport on Saturday. About 7,000 people had to spend the night in DFW terminals.

At least one tornado appeared to touch down in Ohio on Sunday evening as storms severely damaged or destroyed several homes in Shelby. Multiple people were taken to hospitals with injuries, Richland County Emergency Management Agency director Rick Evans told the Times-Gazette.
