CHICAGO, IL — More than 700 flights into and out of Chicago have been canceled as the area braces for up to 8 inches of snow in a late-April winter storm. The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for Cook County that was to remain in effect until 1 a.m. Sunday. Heavy and “very wet” snow were expected, with up to 2 inches falling every hour. Wind gusts up to 35 mph were also possible.
At Chicago O’Hare International Airport, 585 flights in all were canceled Saturday afternoon, according to the flight tracking site FlightAware. Another 327 flights were delayed at the airport. The airport confirmed in a tweet that more than 500 flights had been canceled.
“The @NWS has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Chicagoland area from 1pm today (4/27) through 1am Sunday (4/28),” the airport wrote. “500+ flights cancelled at ORD. Check flight status w/ carrier.”
Meanwhile, 130 flights were canceled and another 78 were delayed at Chicago Midway International Airport. Midway confirmed in a tweet that at least 30 flights were cancelled and told travelers to check the status of their flight with the airlines.
Multiple airlines have issued travel alerts.
United Airlines offered a waiver for affected travelers at O’Hare. Passengers had to have an original travel date of Saturday, April 27. The waiver means the change fee and any fare difference will be waived for a new flight on United departing on or before Tuesday, April 30. Travelers must remain in the same ticketed class that they originally scheduled and go to the same cities as originally planned.
American Airlines is also allowing impacted fliers at O’ Hare to change their trip with no change fee. The waiver applies to American Airlines passengers who bought a ticket by April 26 and were to travel Saturday. The originating airport and destination must remain the same and fliers must be able to travel on or before Tuesday. Travelers must rebook in the same cabin or pay the difference.
Southwest said its planned flights to Chicago Midway could be delayed, diverted or outright cancelled Saturday. Customers who want to change travel plans can book another flight in the same class or travel standby without paying additional fees. Rebooking must be completed within two weeks of the original travel date.
Customers who purchased their itinerary via Southwest.com or our mobile app are eligible to reschedule their travel plans online or from their mobile device.

JetBlue said it too would waive change or cancellation fees and fare differences for impacted travelers heading to or from O’Hare. Affected customers can rebook online for travel through Tuesday. Alternatively, they can simply request to have their payment refunded. Original tickets must have been booked on or before Saturday.
