Suspicious Device In Bag Of Man Hit By Train Deemed Safe: NYPD

OZONE PARK, QUEENS — A suspicious device found in a backpack belonging to a man hit by a train in Queens Friday has been deemed safe, police said.

The man was critically injured after being struck by an A train at the 80th Street and Liberty Avenue station in Ozone Park shortly before 7 a.m.

Trains on the A line were suspended between Euclid Avenue and Lefferts Boulevard/Far Rockaway as the NYPD’s bomb squad investigated the bag. Reports suggested it contained something resembling a pipe bomb, but it was found to be safe, police said.

Witnesses told police that the man jumped in front of the northbound train as it arrived at the station, an NYPD spokesman said. He was taken to Jamaica Hospital in critical condition, police said.

The suspicious package in the man’s bag turned out to be a thermos, according to reporters at the scene.
