NORTH MIAMI, FL — A 30-year-old Hallandale Beach man has been accused of being the gunman who opened fire on a 68-year-old congregant outside Young Israel of Greater Miami in North Miami last month. Carlints St Louis was charged Tuesday with attempted felony murder with a firearm and other offenses.
Court documents released by investigators early Wednesday morning revealed that St Louis has been back to the synagogue multiple times in a different vehicle since the July 28 shooting and that he reported his 9 mm handgun stolen to Hallandale Beach police on Monday.
“The victim had walked up the walkway and was approaching the synagogue in order to unlock the doors prior to the commencement of religious services when the subject vehicle … abruptly approached and stopped in front of the synagogue,” court documents said. “The defendant then exited the driver compartment of the subject vehicle, assumed a shooting stance while pointing a firearm at the victim and proceeded to discharge his firearm multiple times at the victim.”
Miami-Dade police said St Louis fled the scene in his black Chevrolet Impala but left a trail of nine, 9 mm casings behind at the scene. His car was picked up on police license plate readers about three miles away from the synagogue around the time of the shooting. Court documents also said St Louis’ mobile phone was tracked to the cellular phone tower closest to the synagogue within 20 minutes of the shooting. Police reviewed bodycam footage from a previous traffic stop involving St Louis driving the same vehicle.
Yosef Lifshutz was shot multiple times in his lower extremities outside Young Israel of Greater Miami around 6:34 p.m., according to Miami-Dade police.
“The victim ultimately collapsed on the ground,” court documents said, noting that Lifshutz made an attempt to get away from the gunfire.
Dr. Damon Salzman, president of the synagogue, branded the shooting as the act of a “coward” and called for donations to help cover the wounded man’s ongoing medical expenses.
“It does not take terrorist to try and kill someone isolated and defenseless. It takes a coward,” Salzman said shortly after the shooting. “It takes someone without courage to attack an elderly defenseless man sitting in front of a place of sanctuary.”
Miami-Dade police said the incident occurred near the front entrance to the synagogue, which is located at 990 NE 171 St.
Security has been heightened at many U.S. synagogues since the Oct. 27, 2018, attack on the Pittsburgh Tree of Life synagogue in which 11 people were killed by a gunman.
