LOUISVILLE, KY. – As the 2016 softball season begins, the Oilers of Pearland (Texas) begin atop the USA Today Sports/NFCA Pre-Season High School Super 25 rankings. The Oilers return a strong nucleus of talent from last season that includes pitcher Alyssa Denham, who finished her 2015 campaign with an overall record of 21-3. The Oilers went 23-7 in 2015, falling to Brazoswood (Clute, Texas) in the regional quarterfinal.
No strangers to the USA Today Sports/NFCA High School Super 25, the Diablos of Mission Viejo (Calif.) occupy the No. 2 slot in the pre-season poll. The Diablos only loss of the 2015 season was to Yucaipa (Calif.) in the Southern Section Division II finals. They will get an early season test when they square off against pre-season No. 16, Los Alamitos (Calif.) on March 17.
Rounding out the top 5 are Reed (Sparks, Nev.), Gainesville (Fla.), and Pacifica (Garden Grove, Calif.).
Overall, sixteen states are reflected on the USA Today Sports/NFCA Pre-Season High School Super 25. Texas, California, and Florida each have multiple teams represented.
The USA Today Sports/NFCA High School Super 25 will resume on Thursday, March 24 and will be released every Thursday through June 9.
